The Origin of Buddhiraju

That there lived two brothers hailing from Kondapalli with their Surname as Kondapalli. They worked as Accountants / Finance Ministers in the than Hyderabad Nawab’s Government. During their tenure, fire destroyed the account books. The Navab ordered these brothers to reconstruct the accounts. They reconstructed the accounts based on their memory in a record time. The Nawab was surprised to see the excellent work and bestowed on them the title Buddhiraju. Henceforth, that title became the surname. He also granted them the whole coastal belt of present West Godavari District up to Narasapur as inam. Then one (or both?) among the brothers came and settled in the village Vissakoderu which now lies outside the Municipal limits of Bhimavaram. The person or persons settled here were great devotees of Devi or Shakthi. They were wearing the Sivalingam. Someone among the later generations didn’t perform the Upasana properly and that turned out to be a curse on the family.

My father, my father’s father i.e. my grandfather lived in Bhimavaram only. My grandfather Buddhiraju Kanaka Raju was an advocate in Bhimavaram. They were seven brothers. Two were in Bhimavaram, one migrated to Eluru, one to Vijayanagaram another settled in Vissakoderu village itself. I have no information regarding others. My grandfather’s father was from Vissakoderu village. Perhaps two (or three) generations before that the Buddhiraju (Kondapalli) brother(s) came to Vissakoderu from Kondapalli. This must have happened around the years between 1650-1700. That original tiled house was there when I was very young.

All that I have stated above was narrated to me by my father’s eldest brother late Dr. B.V. Seshagiri Rao (B.V.S. Rao) who was a popular medical practitioner during 1950s at 16D, Bepinpal Road, Kalighat, Kolkatha (formerly Calcutta). It was a coincidence that I was with him in Calcutta a few days before his death. One night he requested me to sleep by his side and told me all this and more till late in the night. No one in my family was aware of this history till then.
